Sincere apologies, this should never have happened. I sincerely hope this gets fixed soon, or at least. 0.50 still has the 16x16 version of the standart tileset, but using it makes the game unplayable since there seems to be no support for non-43 tiles. All of the files that were orphaned are now in the new Orphaned Files category at the bottom of the category list. In pre-0.50 DF, you could edit the init.txt file to use a tileset with square (or any other resolution) tiles instead of standard 43. Thankfully all file downloads themselves were unaffected. A lot of other data (comments, votes, so forth) was likewise rolled back. User accounts were obviously rolled back too accounts newer than the time of the database backup will need to be recreated. File listings for file IDs 10461 - 16147 could only be partially recovered but have fully intact and up to date file downloads. Long story very short: the site database was lost, the server didn't have automated backups like we thought, and the database had to be rolled back to one from 2015 (yes, I know). The majority of the work will be in getting this config set up, though it isn't really difficult once you wrap your head around how the data is structured (the example files included with vanilla DF do a decent job explaining it).Registration is not required to download. You have to create the graphic to be used, then create or edit the config file that tells DF what graphic file and tile position on that file to use for a particular creature type. Graphics sets, which when configured are used instead of the tileset glyph for a particular creature, take a bit more work than a tileset but still do not require programming. The first is that the dwarves are all colored silhouettes, which is incorrect - as you can see, the Miner is using the correct Mayday sprite, but the others appear to be bugged. There are some config changes (to data/init/d_init.txt) than can be made that effect how the tileset is used, as well as some raw file configuration, but these are not required if you are going for a 'vanilla' change. I'm using Mayday, but I'm not sure if the bug is with Mayday specifically or with Dwarf Fortress itself. Once you have the new tileset created, it is literally just a matter of copying it to the data/art directory and updating data/init/init.txt to pick that PNG image on startup.
Changing from one to the other after you learned to play the game will always feel a bit weird because you will be forced to re-learn the symbols. Tilesets are normally just making the 256 tiles that make up Codepage 437, which is what DF uses for the default 'vanilla ASCII' representations of everything in the game. People who start with ASCII learn to recognize their symbols and are lost if they try to use 'image' tilesets and vice-versa for players who start with tilesets.
